MOONLIGHT

Moonlight is my first attempt in doing a short story comic which is more than 30 pages long. This is a fantasy-based romance story but it is drawn unlike the typical shoujo manga style.

The story is inspired from Dante's Divine Comedy, a famous literary work. My work is about Dante, who had already died and went to hell, but still longed to see Beatrice again. Virgil appears and granted his wish, but Beatrice had reincarnated and unable to recall anything from the past. Only when Dante disappeared to fulfill his promise made with Virgil, did Beatrice seem to recall something from the past...

Process

The 33 page comics is initially planned out in Chinese, and then translated to English and Japanese. The whole process from script to print is carried out using the popular software "Manga Studio", the English version of the popular Japanese software "Comic Studio".

With help from my Japanese friends, it is translated into Japanese and sent to Shueisha's monthly comic magazine "Cookie" on Sep. 2007. It received a grade B along with some editor's comments to help me improve on my next work ^^.
The Japanese are indeed passionate about their manga business and serious in improving the budding artist's skills.

If you understand Japanese, the original text is:

しっかりとしたストーリー構成は好感が持てた。
幻想的な画風と比べて、人物のペンタッチが不慣れに見えたので練習を。
背景は暗くなりすぎないように!

From my first attempt, I realized that my working methodology is a mistake. For example, I should have sketched and typed out all the dialogues to pass on to friends. This way, I can find out which part is unclear and which part needs to be improved on. The Japanese calls this "ne-mu". Much like a storyboard for film and animation. The ne-mu can be very rough, with only attention to the story structure, panel layout and camera angle. With a good ne-mu, I would not be drawing the final artwork and changing the story at the same time.
